Description: Fairport Harbor West Breakwater Lighthouse is located on Lake Erie near the end of the west breakwater at the mouth of the Grand River. It was built in 1925 to replace the existing lighthouse that was falling into disrepair. In 1917 Congress allowed $42, 000 for construction of the new lighthouse, but because of World War I, the construction was delayed. The lighthouse was constructed of an iron shell that was assembled in Buffalo, New York and transported to Fairport Harbor. Description: Reverse reads: "Ident. Sandusky sailing club. Credit line:Ohio State Dept. of Conservation." A group of sailboats from the Sandusky Sailing Club sail along Lake Erie in Ohio. The club was founded in 1932 when an increase in dock fees at Sandusky's Battery Park Marina brought several sailors together to protest. There were 44 charter members and their dues were set at 25 cents per year. The club is still in existence today and hosts several different kinds of events including regattas, sailing festivals, and special island races. They also offer facilities for sailboats and learning to sail programs for children. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Dated to the 1930s or 1940s, this photograph shows two cargo ships, probably carrying ore, and a tug boat on Lake Erie near Cleveland, Ohio. A note on the reverse of the photograph reads "Dist. 6 files." This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. The Ohio Guide Collection consists of 4,769 photographs collected for use in Ohio Guide and other publications of the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio from 1935-1939. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: During the late nineteenth century, Cleveland became an important industrial city. Located along numerous transportation routes as well as near large deposits of coal and iron ore, the city prospered. John D. Rockefeller and his partners began the Standard Oil Company in Cleveland during the 1860s. At the same time, Samuel Mather began steel production and enhanced Cleveland's economic importance. In 1880, twenty-eight percent of Cleveland's workforce found work in the steel mills. Cleveland emerged as an important industrial center, but its citizens sometimes suffered. During the Great Depression, both the steel and oil companies endured difficult financial times. To stay afloat, many businesses laid off workers. By 1933, roughly one-third of Cleveland's workers were unemployed during the third full year of the Great Depression. Reverse reads: "Cleveland Lakefront. Taken from Terminal Tower. Description: In 1928 Cleveland voters approved a $2.5 million bond for the construction of Cleveland Municipal Stadium; widely believed to have been part of an attempt to secure the 1932 Olympics, however Los Angeles was chosen as the host in 1923. The Stadium was the largest of its kind at the time, seating over 78,000 people. Together with the Mall and Public Square, the Stadium hosted the 1936 great Lakes Exposition. From 1947 to 1994 it housed the Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Indians. Municipal Stadium was demolished in 1996 to erect the present Cleveland Browns Stadium. Conceived in the 1903 Group Plan as a civic center in the City Beautiful style, a long park flanked by neoclassical government buildings, the Mall was to have been capped at its north end by the Union Terminal train station. The station's intended location shifted south and west; a rail approach from the southeast, along Ontario Avenue, was excavated and bridged in 1929.
